Why Connecticut homes need a different approach

Coastal humidity and salt air from Long Island Sound make Greenwich homes more demanding to insulate than most. Colonial and mid-century homes dominate the town — many with knee-wall attics, uninsulated bonus rooms, and complex rooflines. Nealon has worked here since 1977, familiar with Greenwich's historic district rules and coastal building codes.

Frequently Asked Questions?

Is insulation really that important in a coastal town like Greenwich?

Yes — especially in Greenwich. Long Island Sound brings humid, salt-laden air year-round that increases energy loss and can accelerate moisture damage in wall cavities and attic spaces. Without proper insulation and air sealing, you will face higher bills, uneven temperatures, and potential rot in coastal-exposed areas of your home.

Why do Greenwich homes need a different insulation approach?

Greenwich combines coastal humidity, large historic homes, waterfront exposure, and complex rooflines. Insulation must be customized — standardized approaches miss too many building-specific variables.

What insulation issues are common in Greenwich colonials?

Knee walls, finished attic spaces, bonus rooms, garage ceilings, and older framing are common sources of comfort problems in colonial-style homes.

Do waterfront Greenwich homes need moisture-specific insulation planning?

Yes. Salt air, humidity, and wind exposure make ventilation, air sealing, and moisture-safe materials especially critical near the water.

Can historic Greenwich homes be insulated without affecting their character?

Yes. Improvements in attics, crawlspaces, basements, and hidden cavities leave the exterior and historic details untouched.

What's the best type of insulation for older Greenwich homes?

For Greenwich's older colonials and historic homes, dense-pack cellulose is the go-to — it fills wall cavities without demolition, handles salt-air exposure well, and resists moisture. Spray foam is ideal for crawl spaces, rim joists, and the high-end renovations that are common throughout Greenwich.

Can I qualify for rebates through Energize Connecticut?

Yes. Greenwich homeowners can qualify for rebates through Energize Connecticut — up to 75% off insulation and weatherization work. Nealon guides you through the energy audit, paperwork, and application to maximize your savings with minimal hassle.

My upstairs is boiling in summer. Can insulation help with that?

Yes — and this is very common in Greenwich's older colonials and Cape Cods. An under-insulated attic can reach 130°F in summer, pushing heat directly into living spaces. Upgrading to R-49 or R-60 blown-in insulation with proper ventilation baffles makes a dramatic, immediate difference.

How do I know if my walls have insulation?

Many Greenwich homes — particularly in the backcountry and historic district — were built before wall insulation was standard. A thermal imaging scan or small test hole reveals what is inside. Nealon adds dense-pack cellulose through small drill holes without removing any drywall.

Do I need to insulate my crawl space or basement in Greenwich?

Strongly recommended. Greenwich's proximity to Long Island Sound means elevated ground moisture that enters through crawl spaces and rim joists year-round. Sealing these areas with spray foam or rigid foam board reduces humidity, prevents mold, and significantly improves floor warmth.

Is insulation only helpful in winter?

Not at all. Greenwich summers bring humid salt air and radiant heat that push cooling costs up significantly. Good insulation keeps heat out in summer just as effectively as it keeps warmth in during winter — meaning year-round comfort and lower energy bills throughout the year.

How long does it take to insulate a Greenwich home?

Most Greenwich projects take 1–2 days depending on scope. Attic, wall, and crawl space work can often be completed in a single visit. Nealon works cleanly and with minimal disruption — particularly important in Greenwich's historic homes where preserving interiors is a priority.

I have contracted Nealon twice, both times Dave provided me with thorough information and alternatives with competitive price quotes. First project, completed a year ago, was for insulating a single room, for which Dave suggested an alternative to my initial request that cost much less. Chris and his crew completed the work from the interior of the house in a single day, and I was exceedingly pleased with the results. Chris was just as informative and helpful and courteous and friendly as was Dave. My second project, completed last week, was for insulating the entire house with blown-in cellulose from the exterior of the house. As the exterior sidings are aluminum rather than vinyl, this was more difficult and more time-consuming, as aluminum does not bend as easily. In fact, another company informed they do not work on houses with aluminum siding as the risk of damage is too great. But Bennett and his crew were such efficient and hard workers that they completed the job in two days with no damage to the siding. Same as for Dave and Chris, Bennett’s information and advice were invaluable.

"They did great work they were in and out in no time and they cleaned up afterwards very happy with them"

Nealon did an outstanding job in terms of courteous services, as their team members, as well as Chris who was responsible for directing the job, were most professional!!! They cleaned up nicely, and my goods remained intact. Also and happily stated, it’s been one week since they’ve installed insulation in our home, and we notice a huge difference in the amount of energy we are using for heating…which equates to $avings!!! In short, we’d use them again, and glad we chose them for this endeavor!!!

Highly recommended. Their estimate was competitive, the work was done in a timely and clean manner, they explained what was done, and our house is warmer as we head into the winter. When we had a question, they came back out to talk with us and helped us answer our questions. I will use them again and recommend them to anyone.

They are an amazing company to do work with! Jen in the office is polite, pleasant, and very competent. The work was done well and very quickly. We had our attic and basement insulated. I would 100% recommend!

Timothy Saunders

The Nealon team was professional and considerate of my property. I noticed a 200-kilo watt decrease in my electric bill along with an additional savings in oil consumption of 50 gallons. No more drafty cellars and so far, the mice have gone elsewhere.

Christine

Fast, efficient and great price! Didn’t even notice them insulating our attic and making a big difference already! Would highly recommend for anyone that wants to cut down on their energy bill!!

David Chase

Great experience! Very friendly and professional. They were on time, stuck to their quote and work timeline and have done a great job with two projects for me. I would definitely recommend.
